Red Bull Music Academy - Video Archive - Moodymann

Red Bull Music Academy - Video Archive - Moodymann

Happy Carnival London..

80's Playback..

Evelyn Champagne King - Love Come Down..

1982.. I was 9 but my Dad had this on rotation. I was lucky enough to have the 45 passed down to me. This was a magical time when it was very cool to be into Funk.
I remember Aretha Franklins 'Jump to It' would be played alot around this same time. MUSIC!

Another great.. Out to all those Torontonians who grew up listening to 94 WBLK out of Buffalo. Those were the days before they blocked the signal! PAUSE TAPES BABY.

Joyce Sims - All in All

Stumbled onto this.. Great memories. Very big record with that heavy electro influence. Out to my old east scarborough crew. Big up Trevor Welshman wherever your at.. Learned alot from you about the art of dj'ing. The 12 inch for this had some great dubs as well.

Sheila E: The Beat Goes On..

I had a ridiculous crush on Sheila E. in the 80's. Purple Rain baby.

The Jets..

Guilty pleasure. This goes hand in hand with my love for New Edition (Candy Girl) period.

Jermaine Stewart - Word is Out..

I was 11 when this 12 inch came out. I wore a hole in it. The dub version was ridiculous as well. The beat was heavy and did'nt sound like anything out at the time. BIG CHOON.. Very disappointed when I saw the video haha ..

Cameo Favourites..

Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam..

On that 80's vibe.. Yes.. I had a massive thing for Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. haha

I loved this album like cook food. Big up Full Force!

Electro was starting to blowup at this point.

Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait..

Another ridiculously catchy intro and b line.. This was a massive record when it came out.

Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love...

I was fascinated by this record when it came out. The intro would catch you and it did'nt sound like anything else at the time. The dub version on the flip of the 12 was RIDICULOUS. Track it down if you get a chance.. Timeless.

The Stax Records Story..

I may have posted this in the last couple of years but it's a great little peep into the world of Stax.

Taking in some Classic Soul Music.. Inspiration

I find it refreshing to revisit the classics every few months.. Here is some music my fam would play in the house when I was a kid.. Enjoy..

Bobby Womack - Some of my Favourites..

One of my absolute favourite soul singers. They simply don't make them like Bobby Womack anymore.

Redbull Music Academy Culture Clash Round 2..

Press Release: August 19th 2010

Red Bull Music Academy presents
Culture Clash

Thursday 14th October
7pm – 3am

Roundhouse

Roundhouse is the setting for London’s biggest soundclash.
Going head to head will be Goldie, Skream & Benga,
Mikey Dread & more..

For the second time, the Red Bull Music Academy brings Culture Clash to Camden's Roundhouse, on Thursday 14th October 2010. Four contending soundsystems, representing four branches of London bass music. Five rounds of the very best cross-genre explorations. One champion. Who wins? You, the crowd, decide.

Ever since Carnival first came to Notting Hill half a century ago, soundsystems have carved their reputations into the capital's music tapestries. To celebrate this tradition, some of the city's biggest soundmen enter the ring under the watchful eye of the mighty Don Letts – to thrash out tunes and battle for sub-bass supremacy.

The line up on the night welcomes some of the most pioneering names in the evolution of bass music, from roots reggae to jungle to dubstep, and everything in between.

Goldie’s Metalheadz feat Andy C, Shy FX, Storm, MC GQ & MC Justyce
Skream & Benga presents Joker & MC Nomad & Artwork
Channel One Soundsystem feat Mikey Dread, Ras Kayleb & full crew
Soul Jazz Records Sound System presents 100% Dynamite
Hosted By: Don Letts

In the red corner, we have the Soul Jazz Records Sound System. Part of the empire that is Soul Jazz Records (who count artists as diverse as ESG, Four Tet, Ragga Twins, Subway, Tetine, Kalbata, and the late Steve Reid as part of their growing family), SJRSS’s strategy looks to be whipping the crowd into a frenzy with a mash-up of vintage funk, deep soul, rocksteady, dancehall and future bass cuts.

In the black corner, it's none other than the legendary Channel One who've been spreading the gospel of Jah Rastafari worldwide for the best part of 30 years. Founded by brothers Jah T and Mikey Dread, Channel One has blown up Carnival since back in the day – at Culture Clash they will be serving original roots reggae sounds by the pound.

In the green corner, Skream & Benga will be throwing down heavy wobble to a baying crowd. With gravity-defying beats buoyed on a tsunami of sub-bass, the ruling kings of dubstep will be joined by young pretenders Joker & MC Nomad and the third piece of supergroup Magnetic Man, Artwork.

And, last but not least, in the final corner, we bow to the reigning Culture Clash champion Goldie himself: a man whose Metalheadz label and weekly residency at London's legendary Blue Note propelled the junglist movement to the forefront of public consciousness. Add to this the release of 'Timeless', the twisted hymn to urban Britain that remains one of the key albums of the last 20 years, and you have a king who will not be taken down quietly. Goldie will welcome Andy C, Shy FX, Storm and MC GQ into the ring with himself. But will he be able to keep those infamous teeth in his crown with such a blistering line-up of talent ready to snatch it away?

So join us as the Four Soundmen of the Apocalypse darken North London’s door and shake the foundations of all that has gone before them, to fight it out at the second instalment of the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash.
