RBMA Culture Clash is Back -- October 14th!

Channel One, Metalheadz, Skream and Benga limber up for RBMA’s latest Culture Clash

Red Bull Music Academy presents the latest in its series of Culture Clash events on Thursday 14 October.

The clash takes place at The Roundhouse in London, a suitably epic and august venue for an evening of gladiatorial combat that will see the likes of Goldie, Skream, Andy C, Benga and Joker all vying for soundboy supremacy.

To be precise, there are four contending soundsystems taking part. First up is reigning Culture Clash champion Goldie and his seasoned Metalheadz crew. The man with the smile that could crush steel is joined by Andy C, Shy FX, Storm and MC GQ, and it’d take a brave gambler indeed to bet against this lot overpowering the opposition yet again.

The even more experienced Channel One Soundsystem will be appearing in full effect, with Mikey Dread and Ras Kayleb leading the charge. Carnival fixtures since time immemorial, Channel One’s riddims might be slower than those of their junglist counterparts, but they’re no less heavy. They’ll be on hand to remind us that true roots reggae packs a low-end punch like no other.

Of course not all combatants are such veterans: the younger generation is represented by Skream and Benga, who it’s safe to say will be completely unphased by the reputations of their elders. The Croydon dubsteppers have smashed party after party over the past half-decade with their unashamedly full-frontal sound, and for this special night they’ll be joined by Joker, MC Nomad and their Magnetic Man compadre Artwork. Metalheadz watch out.

Last but by no means least is the venerable Soul Jazz Soundsystem, emissaries from the record label of the same name, and master selectors of gritty funk, rocksteady, dancehall, dubstep and beyond. They might seem like the underdogs, but with good taste and DJ chops to spare, they might just pull it off…

The night runs 7pm-3am, and it’s going to be very loud indeed. Find more information and tickets here.

Happy Carnival London..

80's Playback..

Evelyn Champagne King - Love Come Down..

1982.. I was 9 but my Dad had this on rotation. I was lucky enough to have the 45 passed down to me. This was a magical time when it was very cool to be into Funk.
I remember Aretha Franklins 'Jump to It' would be played alot around this same time. MUSIC!

Another great.. Out to all those Torontonians who grew up listening to 94 WBLK out of Buffalo. Those were the days before they blocked the signal! PAUSE TAPES BABY.

Joyce Sims - All in All

Stumbled onto this.. Great memories. Very big record with that heavy electro influence. Out to my old east scarborough crew. Big up Trevor Welshman wherever your at.. Learned alot from you about the art of dj'ing. The 12 inch for this had some great dubs as well.

Sheila E: The Beat Goes On..

I had a ridiculous crush on Sheila E. in the 80's. Purple Rain baby.

The Jets..

Guilty pleasure. This goes hand in hand with my love for New Edition (Candy Girl) period.

Jermaine Stewart - Word is Out..

I was 11 when this 12 inch came out. I wore a hole in it. The dub version was ridiculous as well. The beat was heavy and did'nt sound like anything out at the time. BIG CHOON.. Very disappointed when I saw the video haha ..

Cameo Favourites..

Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam..

On that 80's vibe.. Yes.. I had a massive thing for Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. haha

I loved this album like cook food. Big up Full Force!

Electro was starting to blowup at this point.

Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait..

Another ridiculously catchy intro and b line.. This was a massive record when it came out.

Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love...

I was fascinated by this record when it came out. The intro would catch you and it did'nt sound like anything else at the time. The dub version on the flip of the 12 was RIDICULOUS. Track it down if you get a chance.. Timeless.

The Stax Records Story..

I may have posted this in the last couple of years but it's a great little peep into the world of Stax.

Taking in some Classic Soul Music.. Inspiration

I find it refreshing to revisit the classics every few months.. Here is some music my fam would play in the house when I was a kid.. Enjoy..

Bobby Womack - Some of my Favourites..

One of my absolute favourite soul singers. They simply don't make them like Bobby Womack anymore.

Redbull Music Academy Culture Clash Round 2..

Press Release: August 19th 2010

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Red Bull Music Academy presents
Culture Clash

Thursday 14th October
7pm – 3am

Roundhouse
Chalk Farm Road, Camden
London NW1 8EH
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Roundhouse is the setting for London’s biggest soundclash.
Going head to head will be Goldie, Skream & Benga,
Mikey Dread & more..

For the second time, the Red Bull Music Academy brings Culture Clash to Camden's Roundhouse, on Thursday 14th October 2010. Four contending soundsystems, representing four branches of London bass music. Five rounds of the very best cross-genre explorations. One champion. Who wins? You, the crowd, decide.

Ever since Carnival first came to Notting Hill half a century ago, soundsystems have carved their reputations into the capital's music tapestries. To celebrate this tradition, some of the city's biggest soundmen enter the ring under the watchful eye of the mighty Don Letts – to thrash out tunes and battle for sub-bass supremacy.

The line up on the night welcomes some of the most pioneering names in the evolution of bass music, from roots reggae to jungle to dubstep, and everything in between.

Goldie’s Metalheadz feat Andy C, Shy FX, Storm, MC GQ & MC Justyce
Skream & Benga presents Joker & MC Nomad & Artwork
Channel One Soundsystem feat Mikey Dread, Ras Kayleb & full crew
Soul Jazz Records Sound System presents 100% Dynamite
Hosted By: Don Letts

In the red corner, we have the Soul Jazz Records Sound System. Part of the empire that is Soul Jazz Records (who count artists as diverse as ESG, Four Tet, Ragga Twins, Subway, Tetine, Kalbata, and the late Steve Reid as part of their growing family), SJRSS’s strategy looks to be whipping the crowd into a frenzy with a mash-up of vintage funk, deep soul, rocksteady, dancehall and future bass cuts.

In the black corner, it's none other than the legendary Channel One who've been spreading the gospel of Jah Rastafari worldwide for the best part of 30 years. Founded by brothers Jah T and Mikey Dread, Channel One has blown up Carnival since back in the day – at Culture Clash they will be serving original roots reggae sounds by the pound.

In the green corner, Skream & Benga will be throwing down heavy wobble to a baying crowd. With gravity-defying beats buoyed on a tsunami of sub-bass, the ruling kings of dubstep will be joined by young pretenders Joker & MC Nomad and the third piece of supergroup Magnetic Man, Artwork.

And, last but not least, in the final corner, we bow to the reigning Culture Clash champion Goldie himself: a man whose Metalheadz label and weekly residency at London's legendary Blue Note propelled the junglist movement to the forefront of public consciousness. Add to this the release of 'Timeless', the twisted hymn to urban Britain that remains one of the key albums of the last 20 years, and you have a king who will not be taken down quietly. Goldie will welcome Andy C, Shy FX, Storm and MC GQ into the ring with himself. But will he be able to keep those infamous teeth in his crown with such a blistering line-up of talent ready to snatch it away?

So join us as the Four Soundmen of the Apocalypse darken North London’s door and shake the foundations of all that has gone before them, to fight it out at the second instalment of the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash.

To get an idea of what to expect, watch the highlight clip of the first Culture Clash that went down on February 17th, while the Red Bull Music Academy was in session in London, below.

Don't Sleep N.Y.C Reviews Marcus Visionary Carib LP

Hi all. This is a review of Marcus Visionary's phenomenal album on Liondub International that dropped earlier this year. A terrific album end to end, it chronicles Marcus' funkier side featuring vocals from 77Klash, Jahdan, Johnny Osbourne, Luciano and more. Full review, Links + free download after the jump...

Marcus Visionary | Carib LP - Liondub International | 2010
A massive winning LP for Liondub International that could have been years in the making judging by the shear number of nang dubstep, soca and funky-inflected riddims Marcus Visionary has packed into this single album! The entire 27 tracks are a striking tour de force displaying Marcus' dark dnb and breaks side keeping step with his Guyanese soca-steeped roots. From his diverse backgrounds Marcus has culled some very notable collaborators for the Carib project. Two opening anthems, featuring the Brooklyn stylings of Jahdan Blakkamoore and 77Klash, set the tone for the rest of the album. ShyFX protege Benny Page also touches down for In the VIP, a funky re-rub of Slim Thug's 3 Kings, and the sly and deceptively simple, yet heavy-hitting Black Panther. Closing out the album, Marcus presents three wonderful dub cuts featuring dancehall godfathers Johnny Osbourne and Luciano. In between the album is predominantly a funky affair - albeit one clocking a steady dj-friendly 140bpm - pitting dnb synths and dark atmosphere against equatorial percussion and dub pressure. Reminiscent of UK garage master El-B, Left Foot Skank stands out from the others for its irresistible wobble and 2-step drum rhythm. Other tracks, like Surinam, Georgetown and Carifesta are straight carnival bashment and are sure to put any dancefloor in a right frenzy. Hourglass also stands out for its shuffling acoustic elements and malevolent sub bass. Amongst these tracks are several well-crafted dubstep tunes. Most of these show Marcus' years in the dnb scene quite strongly and trade the well known half-tempo snare and wobble bass for ragga breaks and grinding bass synths. Ultimately the number of influences present in the work on this album forces us to abandon the crutch of genre specific sounds. We hear dubstep overlapping with its own roots as well as the parallel histories of dnb, house, techno, soca and dub reggae and producing what for me is a terrific statement of where bass music has come from and where it is going. You can grab this seminal work on vinyl or digital through these distributors.

ATM Magazine Review of 'Carib'

After weeks of Marcus Visionary's Carib LP tearing up worldwide download charts, ATM magazine goes in and reviews the album. Here is what ATM had to say:

Marcus Visionary
'Carib'
Liondub International

"With a long history of releasing ragga-jungle as part of the Visionaary duo, Marcus Visionary may turn a few heads with his latest album 'Carib' a foray into deepest, darkest dubstep and UK funky spliced with influences from all over the dance music spectrum. Released on NYC based label Liondub International, the album not only features Marcus' musical explorations, but also guest production and vocals from some highly recognisable names, including Johnny Osbourne, Jahdan, Benny Page and Luciano. Weighing in at a whopping 27 tracks, this double LP may appear too ambitious for some, but with an overwhelmingly fresh sound pouring from every track 'Carib' appears to be a perfect mixture of DJ friendly dancefloor killers and esoteric iPod fillers. Highlights include the summertime vibes of 'Mama So Divine' featuring Noble Society and Jahdan, the whirling dubstep/funky hybrid 'In The VIP' alongside Benny Page, and the incredible Detroit techno-soaked '2012' which celebrates carnival rhythms with old school pride. For those of you who fear drum & bass producers who jump on the dubstpe bandwagon, you can put those fears aside as Marcus Visionary proves not only does he have what it takes to produce authentic dubstep, he's brave enough to innovate and try new things along the way. What 'Carib' achieves is an accolade that all bandwagon jumpers should aspire to; truly refreshing music."
