Roundhouse is the setting for London’s biggest soundclash.
Going head to head will be Goldie, Skream & Benga,
Mikey Dread & more..
For the second time, the Red Bull Music Academy brings Culture Clash to Camden's Roundhouse, on Thursday 14th October 2010. Four contending soundsystems, representing four branches of London bass music. Five rounds of the very best cross-genre explorations. One champion. Who wins? You, the crowd, decide.
Ever since Carnival first came to Notting Hill half a century ago, soundsystems have carved their reputations into the capital's music tapestries. To celebrate this tradition, some of the city's biggest soundmen enter the ring under the watchful eye of the mighty Don Letts – to thrash out tunes and battle for sub-bass supremacy.
The line up on the night welcomes some of the most pioneering names in the evolution of bass music, from roots reggae to jungle to dubstep, and everything in between.

Skream & Benga presents Joker & MC Nomad & Artwork

Soul Jazz Records Sound System presents 100% Dynamite
Hosted By: Don Letts
In the red corner, we have the Soul Jazz Records Sound System. Part of the empire that is Soul Jazz Records (who count artists as diverse as ESG, Four Tet, Ragga Twins, Subway, Tetine, Kalbata, and the late Steve Reid as part of their growing family), SJRSS’s strategy looks to be whipping the crowd into a frenzy with a mash-up of vintage funk, deep soul, rocksteady, dancehall and future bass cuts.
In the black corner, it's none other than the legendary Channel One who've been spreading the gospel of Jah Rastafari worldwide for the best part of 30 years. Founded by brothers Jah T and Mikey Dread, Channel One has blown up Carnival since back in the day – at Culture Clash they will be serving original roots reggae sounds by the pound.
In the green corner, Skream & Benga will be throwing down heavy wobble to a baying crowd. With gravity-defying beats buoyed on a tsunami of sub-bass, the ruling kings of dubstep will be joined by young pretenders Joker & MC Nomad and the third piece of supergroup Magnetic Man, Artwork.
And, last but not least, in the final corner, we bow to the reigning Culture Clash champion Goldie himself: a man whose Metalheadz label and weekly residency at London's legendary Blue Note propelled the junglist movement to the forefront of public consciousness. Add to this the release of 'Timeless', the twisted hymn to urban Britain that remains one of the key albums of the last 20 years, and you have a king who will not be taken down quietly. Goldie will welcome Andy C, Shy FX, Storm and MC GQ into the ring with himself. But will he be able to keep those infamous teeth in his crown with such a blistering line-up of talent ready to snatch it away?
So join us as the Four Soundmen of the Apocalypse darken North London’s door and shake the foundations of all that has gone before them, to fight it out at the second instalment of the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash.
To get an idea of what to expect, watch the highlight clip of the first Culture Clash that went down on February 17th, while the Red Bull Music Academy was in session in London, below.

Don't Sleep N.Y.C Reviews Marcus Visionary Carib LP

Hi all. This is a review of Marcus Visionary's phenomenal album on Liondub International that dropped earlier this year. A terrific album end to end, it chronicles Marcus' funkier side featuring vocals from 77Klash, Jahdan, Johnny Osbourne, Luciano and more. Full review, Links + free download after the jump...
Marcus Visionary | Carib LP - Liondub International | 2010
A massive winning LP for Liondub International that could have been years in the making judging by the shear number of nang dubstep, soca and funky-inflected riddims Marcus Visionary has packed into this single album! The entire 27 tracks are a striking tour de force displaying Marcus' dark dnb and breaks side keeping step with his Guyanese soca-steeped roots. From his diverse backgrounds Marcus has culled some very notable collaborators for the Carib project. Two opening anthems, featuring the Brooklyn stylings of Jahdan Blakkamoore and 77Klash, set the tone for the rest of the album. ShyFX protege Benny Page also touches down for In the VIP, a funky re-rub of Slim Thug's 3 Kings, and the sly and deceptively simple, yet heavy-hitting Black Panther. Closing out the album, Marcus presents three wonderful dub cuts featuring dancehall godfathers Johnny Osbourne and Luciano. In between the album is predominantly a funky affair - albeit one clocking a steady dj-friendly 140bpm - pitting dnb synths and dark atmosphere against equatorial percussion and dub pressure. Reminiscent of UK garage master El-B, Left Foot Skank stands out from the others for its irresistible wobble and 2-step drum rhythm. Other tracks, like Surinam, Georgetown and Carifesta are straight carnival bashment and are sure to put any dancefloor in a right frenzy. Hourglass also stands out for its shuffling acoustic elements and malevolent sub bass. Amongst these tracks are several well-crafted dubstep tunes. Most of these show Marcus' years in the dnb scene quite strongly and trade the well known half-tempo snare and wobble bass for ragga breaks and grinding bass synths. Ultimately the number of influences present in the work on this album forces us to abandon the crutch of genre specific sounds. We hear dubstep overlapping with its own roots as well as the parallel histories of dnb, house, techno, soca and dub reggae and producing what for me is a terrific statement of where bass music has come from and where it is going. You can grab this seminal work on vinyl or digital through these distributors.

ATM Magazine Review of 'Carib'

After weeks of Marcus Visionary's Carib LP tearing up worldwide download charts, ATM magazine goes in and reviews the album. Here is what ATM had to say:
Marcus Visionary
'Carib'
Liondub International
"With a long history of releasing ragga-jungle as part of the Visionaary duo, Marcus Visionary may turn a few heads with his latest album 'Carib' a foray into deepest, darkest dubstep and UK funky spliced with influences from all over the dance music spectrum. Released on NYC based label Liondub International, the album not only features Marcus' musical explorations, but also guest production and vocals from some highly recognisable names, including Johnny Osbourne, Jahdan, Benny Page and Luciano. Weighing in at a whopping 27 tracks, this double LP may appear too ambitious for some, but with an overwhelmingly fresh sound pouring from every track 'Carib' appears to be a perfect mixture of DJ friendly dancefloor killers and esoteric iPod fillers. Highlights include the summertime vibes of 'Mama So Divine' featuring Noble Society and Jahdan, the whirling dubstep/funky hybrid 'In The VIP' alongside Benny Page, and the incredible Detroit techno-soaked '2012' which celebrates carnival rhythms with old school pride. For those of you who fear drum & bass producers who jump on the dubstpe bandwagon, you can put those fears aside as Marcus Visionary proves not only does he have what it takes to produce authentic dubstep, he's brave enough to innovate and try new things along the way. What 'Carib' achieves is an accolade that all bandwagon jumpers should aspire to; truly refreshing music."

Carib LP Review - Dubstepped.net

Marcus Visionary hailing from Toronto has been producing a sound for a while that he calls “Sub Soca” and has released two EPs riddled with it. This album out now on Liondub International is the culmination, a collection of 27 tracks that range from the intense sub soca styles of “St. Vincent”, “Belize City” and “Surinam”, to wobbly dubstep tracks like “In the VIP”, or “London”, a 2step feel with “Left Food Skank” and some conscious dubstep vibes on “Nightfall” and “Coffee or Tea.” The music on this album is what it’s all about in dance music for me currently: bass heavy, syncopated rhythms that just make you want to jump and prance. Almost impossible for me to sit still while I write this. This release is high quality and is worth buying regardless, but thanks to Liondub International you can pick up all 27 tracks for a wallet-friendly $14. I’ve selected some favorites below or click the Juno link at the end of the post for full audio previews.

MUDLOVE BLOG REVIEW..

MUDLOVE BLOG REVIEW..
Marcus Visionary - Carib was released 2nd May on Liondub International
The mammoth album that is Marcus Visionary's 'Carib' has finally been released and without doubt it's a stonker. 'The General' is an anthemic opener, once enough peeps have heard this you could imagine a club full of dubsoldiers chanting the chrous, with the fat bass underneath rattling the ribs. But this is not a run-of-the mill dubstep album (although examples of those are few and far between).
Past the first five or so tracks things really start to develop into the totally original genre that Visionary has championed, if not created. The complex tropical rhythms supporting the dubstep/breaks basslines with often hautingly atmospheric synths (Left Foot Skank/Big&Bashy/My Sound) or uplifting percussive lines that create a real carnival atmostphere (Carifesta/Mama So Divine/St.Vincent).
Ever since I bought Left Foot Skank/St.Vincent I've been spending many of my sets simply working up the 145bpm which they really should be played at. At that speed (and with these songs) you enter into a strange place between the relentlessness of techno and the dark skank of dub and it's really hard to find many other artists that can match that energy.
This is a sick album and you WILL NOT hear another one like it, if you buy this you are buying magic. Marcus Visionary please come to the UK to play some gigs!!!

Culture System Reviews Carib - Deep Bass Exploration..

‘Sub-soca’ is certainly a fitting title for the majority of Marcus Visionary’s Carib, a crazy long double LP full of carnival hype that often shifts into overdrive jump-tempos. But it sounds like soca enjoyed through salvaged radio waves discovered by a distant space ship partying as it drifts helplessly in wait for their enemy’s final blow. The speed of the album also hints as much at Visionary’s drum n bass background as it references soca. And like many of the dubstep producers with visible roots in the dnb scene, homie populates the album with dark sci fi aesthetics, albeit tempered with Caribbean, dub, and house influences. This massive release also jumps far into most reaches currently being explored in deep bass, covering the range of future roots to dubstep and tropical tech-house to UK funky. Most of the tracks are rather simple, never introducing anything new beyond the two minute mark, but there’s something in the basis of nearly every track to enjoy.
The Jahdan remixes, the reggae cuts like ‘Nightfall’, and even the rapid paced, destructive wobblings of “In The VIP” are all tuff. The album wouldn’t be what it is without them and the diversity they lend it. But it’s the heavily syncopated, techy tropical stuff and grimey UK Funky that really make this album special. That sub-soca if we’re gonna keep with that. Of them, the ghosts of useless sirens that haunt the ‘London’ soundscape makes it nearly the most gripping. But the identifiably Caribbean track, ‘Pepper Pot,’ is the standout track of them all. Made up of almost entirely percussive elements, the track plows through a diverse array of drums, flips numerous polyrhythms and switches up the main beat over and over again.
You might’ve already heard a lot of this album, since 10 of its 27 songs were already released on two EP’s bearing the Carib title. Listening to these previous releases would mosdef have helped to digest the full length. Although the songs cover a range of styles, and often push into new realms, many sound very similar to each other. When listening, you can tell Visionary was thinking about offering deejays a choice within each style pushed here. “This LP is a collection of dubs compiled and made for DJs with the clubs in mind,” he said in the release notes. This probably also accounts for the brevity of composition in most of the songs, since they’re expected to be blended with other joints.
It drops on NYC-based LionDub International on May 2nd. Read up on label founder Liondub in this Knowledge Magazine Q&A.

Knowledge | Marcus Visionary - Carib LP

Marcus Visionary is a DJ, producer and event promoter from Toronto, Canada. He's a member of Shy FX's Digital Soundboy camp and also co-runs the Liondub International imprint. He's releasing an album soon so we tracked him down to get the latest...
Tell us more about the album you're releasing...
Carib is a collection of dubs that Benny Page and I have been playing in the clubs over the last two years. Most of the album is made up of party tracks for DJs. We realized that the tracks worked really well so I made ten fresh tracks over the last few months on a similar vibe to complete the project. There are 27 tracks in total. The concept is basically getting back to the basics. Four to the floor foot drums and sub bass. Combining all of my musical influences into a melting pot.
What's the thought process behind the title?
I chose the word Carib to describe the sound of the record because there are so many Carribean elements that can be heard in my music. My family is from Guyana and the culture is from the Carribean. I grew up on reggae, soca and dub music so this was the music that comes out of me naturally. I also wanted to include elements from kuduro, house, broken beat, funky and techno as these are all types of music that are constantly influencing me. Ironically Carib is also the word used for the nine tribes of native indians who live throughout the Carribean and South America. My father is black but also has Amerindian blood in him. The Amerindians are the native indians who live in Guyana and I also have their facial features which made the title even more fitting.
What did you set out to achieve with it?
When the dubstep sound hit I started experimenting with the 140 bpm tempo. I started making tracks that I wanted to hear in a club. I love the whole half time / double time thing that can happen with dubstep as it's very similar to jungle. I've always played party music so I wanted to make music that would work well on the dancefloor. I tried to give the tracks more energy in the drums and keep the bass stripped down to the sub. I will add some LFO here and there but for me I always gravitate to tracks with stripped down sub bass and drums.
How does working on albums compare with of singles?
This was my first concept album that funnily enough started off with a collection of singles. I really enjoyed coming up with the concept and following it through to the end. By the time I finished the last track which was London, I knew the LP was complete. With the new digital format it allowed us an opportunity to include many tracks opposed to the regular 12-14 tracks of most LPs.
Can we expect anything different on it?
I've been told that it doesn't really fit into any genre categories so you'll have to listen to it to find out! I'm really happy with all of the DJ support I've recieved so far. Many dubstep DJs have been giving support and I really appreciate it. I hope that more people will enjoy it once it's released May 1st.
Who have you collaborated with on it?
I was fortunate enough to remix the likes of Johnny Osbourne, Luciano, Jahdan, Satori, Shadetek ft. 77 Klash and Noble Society. Coffee and Tea is one of my favourite tracks that I've ever had the honour of working on. Johnny Osbourne is a reggae legend and is also someone that I really admire. Liondub, who played the track for Johnny, said he listened to it in his car for an hour straight. That blew me away! Since then I've worked on quite a few Johnny Osbourne remixes which will be coming out later this year.
What's the next challenge for you?
Creating a single for Digital Soundboy. Shy pushes us to our limits and I appreciate the challenge. I'll also be putting together a jungle LP for my label Liondub International. It has a trailer load of reggae legends on it so I'm really excited about getting it out to the public.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
Watch out for the Humble LP coming soon. Big up the whole Digital Soundboy camp as well as Liondub NYC.
